Proceed Cautiously when Replacing Blasting Abrasives with Hand-tools or High-Pressure Water

Check out this article published by Marine Maintenance Technology International that discusses potential pitfalls when choosing high pressure water and hand-tooling over abrasive blasting. Among them, the author addresses:

  1. The misconception that previously painted substrates can be successfully water-blasted or hand-tooled (while not re-profiled) to achieve the same result as a newly abrasive blasted substrate.
  2. Many of the go-to coating systems/technologies used years prior have changed. As a result they require different profiles and additional levels of cleanliness – which is problematic when conducting spot or total coating replacement.
