Die Spezifikationsserie AB legt angemessene Qualitätskontrollen und Verfahren für den Einsatz recyclingfähiger, gekapselter Strahlmittel während der Untergrundvorbereitung fest. Während viele Beschichtungsspezifikationen nicht direkt auf diese Standards Bezug nehmen, werden sie in anderen Dokumenten der SSPC verwendet – speziell in SSPC-SP7, SSPC-SP6, SSPC-SP10 und SSPC-SP5. Dabei handelt es sich um die insbesondere in den USA, aber auch in anderen Teilen der Welt, am häufigsten angeführten Standards für die Untergrundvorbereitung. Die Serie SP von Standards schrieb schon immer vor, dass Strahlmittel einen AB Qualitätsstandard erfüllen müssen. Vor dieser AB 4 Veröffentlichung wurden für den Einsatz von Verbundstrahlmitteln wie Sponge Media jedoch Ausnahmen gewährt, da keiner der AB Qualitätsstandards auf diese Strahlmittel anwendbar war. „Mit der Etablierung von AB 4 wird es nun einfacher sein, diese neue umweltfreundliche, kostensparende Strahltechnologie zu spezifizieren und einzusetzen“, erläuterte Bill McLaughlin, VP of Technology von Sponge-Jet. „Beschichtungsingenieure und Anlagenleiter werden mithilfe des SSPC-AB 4 Standards in die Lage versetzt, Verbundstrahlmittel ordnungsgemäß zu spezifizieren.“ Er fügte hinzu: „Wichtig ist hier zu betonen, dass diese Verbundpartikel nicht nur aus standardmäßigen Hochleistungs-Strahlmitteln wie Aluminiumoxid und Stahlkies bestehen, sondern darüber hinaus aus einer zweiten Komponente, die die staubarmen und prallresistenten Merkmale bietet, für die dieser Strahlmitteltyp bekannt ist.“ Nach den Empfehlungen der SSPC „legt dieser Standard die Anforderungen für die Auswahl und Bewertung von Strahlmedien fest, die in einer komprimierbaren, ungleichförmigen Matrix eingeschlossen sind“. Andere allgemeine Bezeichnungen für recyclingfähige, gekapselte Strahlmittel, die dieser Spezifikation entsprechen, sind Recyclable Encapsulated Abrasive Media, nachgiebige Strahlmittel, Verbundstrahlmittel, weiche Strahlmittel und gefertigte Strahlmittel. Zudem werden Ingenieure, die ein staubarmes, schädigungsarmes (prallresistentes) Strahlmittel für ein bestimmtes Projekt spezifizieren möchten, mithilfe dieses Standards in der Lage sein, die AB 4 Spezifikation als Teil des Standards für die Untergrundvorbereitung speziell anzuführen.
